Shake is slow?

Hi!

I have a mac pro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Snow lepard 10.6.3 with 10GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ram and a ATI Radeon HD 4870. On that computer I use my shake 4.1.1 retail and it is rely slow. For example if I have a HD clip and I ad blur nod or just play the clip as it is it will not run smoothly!!? Some of the frames run smoothly but most of the clip it slows down and it looks like the computer is working like crazy!
Shouldn't my mac pro manage that?
Should I buy some sort of video card, like kona 3 or blackmagic to help shake?

Thanks for the help

A couple of thoughts:

Shake isn't designed for "normal" playback, so the play function just renders
the frames as fast as possible.

When you render out your result, you have the option of using a Cluster
to use all four cores. In normal playback, you only use one core.

The amount of blur makes a huge difference in processing time.
With a large enough blur amount, you can bring any computer to its knees.

Here's a good article and thread about setting up multiple cores for Compressor:

I think you'll find this thread useful, too:

Once you get your local cluster set up,
the render window lets you choose that option.
